Intoxicated driver in serious condition after slamming into fire truck

BREMERTON -- A Kitsap Fire and Rescue truck suffered damage after being hit nearly head-on by a car Monday night. It happened around 7 p.m. on Fairgrounds Road between Hwy 303 and Old Military Road.

Authorities say the driver of a Pontiac was traveling eastbound when it crossed the center line. The driver of the fire truck took evasive action, swerving off the road into a ditch when the car slammed into it, officials said. The Pontiac was totaled.

The 48-year-old Bremerton man had to be extricated from the vehicle and transported to Harrison Hospital. No word on his condition. The firefighters were not hurt.

Washington State Patrol says the driver was intoxicated. Charges are pending.
