Man tries to steal patrol car, shot by officer

SEATTLE -- Authorities said a man trying to run from a Pacific police officer attempted to steal a patrol car, then hit a Hummer before he was shot by the officer.

The King County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) said the situation began just after 10:30 Thursday night in the 200 block of Sunset Drive, when the officer tried to stop a  40-year-old man who was driving a stolen car on Sunset Drive in Pacific.

The man then got out of the car and began running. KCSO said the officer went after the man, who then jumped into the patrol car and tried to steal it. The officer caught up to the man at the car door and the two got into a confrontation.

At some point, the officer fired several shots and the suspect was hit.

Before he was taken into custody, the suspect managed to drive the patrol car a short ways into a nearby Hummer, sending it into a garage door.

The suspect was taken to Harborview Medical Center in critical custody, but is expected to survive. The officer was not injured during the ordeal.

A King County response team are investigating the shooting.
