Man suspected of I-5 corridor burglaries arrested

BELLINGHAM -- Police said Wednesday they arrested a 44-year-old Mount Vernon man who they believe is responsible for numerous burglaries of businesses along the Interstate 5 corridor.

Detectives sought out the suspect, Douglas L. Jones, because they had arrested him in March for seven counts of trafficking in stolen property.

During an interview, Jones "admitted to involvement in many, but not all, of the 25 local (Bellingham) business burglaries" that have occurred since last August, Bellingham police said in a statement.

Jones was booked into the Whatcom County Jail on initial violations of burglary, malicious mischief and theft.

"Many local residents saw news reports that aired on Monday night that included video of a burglary suspect committing crimes in Arlington, Marysville and Mount Vernon," the Bellingham police statement said. "Our detectives believed this suspect to be Mr. Jones."

Police detectives from those police agencies were interviewing Jones to determine if he was responsible for those burglaries, Bellingham police said.

Arlington police spokeswoman Kristin Banfield said detectives believe this suspect is linked to the Arlington burglaries.
