Two dead in head-on collission near Bellingham

BELLINGHAM - Two people are dead after a head-on collision this morning just north of Bellingham.

Around 12:15 a.m., Washington State Patrol troopers responded to the accident on State Route 539, also known as Guide Meridian Rd,  and Smith Rd.

Troopers say an SUV driven by a 23-year old Ferndale man was driving northbound at a high rate of speed.  Witnesses say the man was driving erratically and was using all lanes to get around traffic.

The SUV driver crossed the center line and stuck a Honda Civic driven by a 20-year old man from Lynden.  That driver died at the scene.

The suspect was transported to St. Joe's Hospital in Bellingham, but died a short time later.

Troopers believe the causing driver may have been drinking prior to the accident.
