Driver injured by chunk of steel debris on Interstate 5

DUPONT - A 23-year-old Yelm man was injured Saturday by a chunk of steel debris, while he was driving south on Interstate 5 near DuPont.

Washington State Patrol Trooper Guy Gill said that the debris was sent airborne after being struck by another vehicle on the north or southbound lanes of I-5.  The debris shattered the car's windshield, striking the man in the head, Gill said.

Amazingly the driver was not seriously hurt.  Gill said that the accident happened around 3 p.m.  Medics transported the man to Tacoma General Hospital; his current condition is unknown.
