Fiery I-5 crash south of JBLM kills one, shuts interstate for hours

TACOMA -- A 3-car collision between two vehicle and a tractor trailer around 10 a.m. Monday blocked all lanes of southbound Interstate 5 traffic near Mounts Road and Old Nisqually Road south of Joint Base Lewis-McChord for nearly two hours.

At least one person was killed in the crash. The crash involved a box truck that was burned beyond recognition.

Washington State Department of Transportation said traffic was being diverted at 10:50 a.m. around the crash. One lane of the road was opened around 2 p.m., officials said, but I-5 traffic was still backed up for miles.
