According the state Department of Health, Liam was the most popular boy’s name and Sophia was the number one girl’s name for Washington babies born in 2012.
Sophia has enjoyed a lengthy stay at the top of the girl’s list – it’s been number one since 2010 and has been in the top 10 since 2004. But Emma – the former most popular Wash. girl’s name from 2003 to 2006 – is closing in Sophia.
Liam, on the other hand, shot relatively quickly up the boy’s list of popular names. It wasn’t even in the top 50 in 2007 before leaping into the top 10 in 2010. But Liam just barely edged out Mason for the top spot – only one more baby was named Liam than Mason in 2012.
Other bits of trivia gleaned from the Department of Health’s annual baby names report: of the 87,415 babies born in Washington state in 2012 and the most popular day for baby births was June 28.
