New pay-per-mile car insurance arrives in Washington

A California company is out to change the way we all purchase car insurance.

MetroMile offers pay-per-mile insurance and it's now available here in Washington, according to the Seattle Times.

If you drive less than 10,000 miles a year, you could save as much as 40% over existing plans.

Customers have to install a device called Metronome that counts their miles.

20 other companies sell insurance based on milage, but MetroMile bills directly, per mile.

The average rate is $25 to $45 dollars a month.

Washington state's Insurance Commissioner approved MetroMile's rates in September.
