VIDEO: 'Robohand' uses 3D printer to give 5-year-old a hand

SEATTLE -- Ivan Owen, an artist based in Bellingham, and Richard Van As in South Africa have designed "Robohand," a mechanical hand prosthesis that is created using a 3D printer. Robohand can be created for anywhere between $10 and $150, depending on the hardware used and the design is public domain -- Owen and Van As wanted to offer people a cheaper alternative to traditional prothesis, which can run in the tens of thousands of dollars.

Owen created a prosthetic hand for five-year-old Liam from South Africa and others have also started using the technology as it gains momentum and a number of people are working to refine the design.
