Studded tire season begins in Washington

OLYMPIA -- Winter season unofficially began Friday as studded traction tires became legal for use in Washington state.

Motorists are allowed to use studded traction from Nov. 1 - Mar.31. Motorists using studded tires after that deadline could incur a fine.

Drivers with studded tires are still recommended to carry chains at higher elevations.

The state is gradually trying to phase out studded tires because of the damage they cause to state roadways, state officials said.
