Koi fish in Seattle park served eviction notice

SEATTLE -- Koi fish in the ponds above Volunteer Park in Seattle are doing so well they need to find a new home.

According to a release issued by Seattle Parks and Recreation, 30 koi that swim in ponds in Volunteer Park will be moved on Wednesday, Oct. 9. The Washington Koi Association is going to move the fish into quarantine for the winter, and in the spring will distribute the fish to members' homes.

Parks officials said they are moving the fish because the koi demand a lot of resources to keep the population healthy.

"In recent years, as the koi population has increased, staff must more frequently flush fresh water through the system and add a chemical product to keep the fish alive," Park officials said in a release. "This is neither sustainable nor cost effective."

Koi are vulnerable to waterfowl droppings that result in fish parasites and diseases. The fish are domesticated varieties of the common carp.
