Female nurse from JBLM killed in Afghanistan

JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCHORD -- One of four soldiers to die in a recent insurgency attack in Afghanistan was a female Lt. stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

According to the Department of Defense, 1st Lt. Jennifer M. Moreno, a 25-year-old from San Diego, Calif, died Oct. 6 from injuries sustained by an improvised explosive device in the Zharie District of Afghanistan. Moreno was assigned to Madigan Army Medical Center at JBLM.

Three other soldiers were killed in the attack.

Moreno was born in San Diego and was commissioned as an Army officer after graduating the University of San Francisco, the Tacoma News Tribune reported. She served as a clinical staff nurse andpart of a joint Special Operations cultural support team. In part, her assignment was to interact with Afghanistan women to gain information about insurgency and local allegiances, the News Tribune reported.

She is survived by her mother, her sisters and a brother, who also serves in the Army.
