Mountain passes see some white stuff

SEATTLE -- For the first time in months, some mountain passes around the state are seeing inches of snow, slowing travel times early in the fall storm season.

No mountain passes were reporting restrictions such as traction tires or chains at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday. But White Pass and Stevens Pass were reporting snow and slush on the roadway at around 4,000 feet. Snoqualmie Pass and Chinook Pass on State Route 415 reported a rain and snow mix, with wet conditions over the roadway.

North Cascade highway was reporting bare and wet conditions, but that was expected to change as the North Cascades pass is one of the highest in the state at more than 5,000 feet.

Some passes don't begin reporting road conditions until Nov. 1.
