Keep Fido safe -- make him ride inside

SEATTLE - The statistics may be alarming: 100,000 dogs die each year riding in pickup truck beds.  The American Humane Association reminds dog owners  that simple, basic actions can prevent serious injury or death while transporting a beloved family pet.   Dog owners should never have their pets ride in the bed of their trucks.  The AHA and the Ford Motor Company have teamed up with a new pet safety campaign called "Dogs Ride Inside."

"Unfortunately, we have all seen dogs riding in truck beds, which is an extremely dangerous way to transport your pet" said Dr Robin Ganzert, president and CEO of American Human Association.

The "Dogs Ride Inside" campaign recommends:

- All animals should ride inside a pickup truck cab - nevere in the bed of a truck.

- At the very minimum, your pet should always ride in the back seat if your truck has one.

- Dogs love sticking their heads outside of a moving car, but that's also one of the easiest ways for a pet to be injured.  Roll the window down to satisfy a curious nose, but not more than that.
