Is your cell phone getting spammed? You're not alone

SEATTLE -- A new list ranked Seattle as one of the top 25 cities in the nation for cell phone spam.

The list was created by messaging security firm Cloudmark and is the first of its kind. It ranked Seattle in seventh place on the list. Fort Lauderdale took the top spot, with Los Angeles, Dallas, Miami and San Francisco not far behind.

Cloudmark told USA Today that most of the spam the company sees overall is related to bank account phishing scams. That is when thieves use fake text messages to trick people into handing over their financial information.

Cloudmark also said it sees a lot of reports of Android malware, although it is low in the U.S. since most Android apps in this country are purchased through Google Play.

As for the type of spam that seemed to hit Seattle the most, Cloudmark said it was related to dating websites. While an exact reason was not known, a spokesperson for Cloudmark wondered if it had to with the number of wealthy single people who call Redmond home.

The entire Cloudmark list can be found here.
