Police dog found 1 day after escaping kennel during storm

Duke

LAKEWOOD -- Duke, the Lakewood police dog who ran away from his kennel home during Thursday's storm, was found safe and sound Friday.

"Apparently Duke wandered into a lady’s backyard and she recognized him from the media coverage and called him by his name and he responded," Lakewood police Lt. Chris Lawler said Friday. "She held onto him until the police were called. He is in good health and back with the handler."

Duke escaped Thursday afternoon from his kennel near the intersection of 208th Street and Mountain Highway in the Spanaway area, police said. Duke's handler said the dog chewed his way out of his kennel.

Duke is a lab retriever mix who is about 10 1/2 years old and has 61/2 years of service with LPD.
