ROY -- One man was killed and another was critically injured Thursday when their car veered off State Route 507 north of Roy and struck a tree, the Washington State Patrol said. Speed was cited as the factor in the crash.

The 1996 Chevy Corvette was traveling northbound on SR 507 at East Gate Road at a high rate of speed and attempted to pass traffic in the southbound lane. The driver lost control and left the roadway to the right. The car slammed into a tree and the passenger was ejected.

The driver, a 26-year-old man from Roy, died. His passenger, Joshua Clark, 26, of Puyallup, was taken to the hospital with critical injuries.

It was the second such accident in as many nights. On Wednesday night, two people died when their car left the roadway on State Route 8 near McCleary and struck a tree.
