Bakery in gay wedding cake controversy closes up shop

GRESHAM, Ore (KPTV) - The Gresham bakery that refused to make a wedding cake for a gay couple has closed its doors, but the owners said they're not going out of business.

Sweet Cakes By Melissa announced on its Facebook page Friday that the business will transition out of its shop in Gresham and into the owner's home.

The bakery will continue to fill orders.

The owner told customers the move was an opportunity to spend more time with her children.

Sweet Cakes By Melissa made national headlines earlier this year when it refused to sell a wedding cake to a lesbian couple, citing a conflict in religious beliefs.

The controversy sparked several protests, and caught the attention of Ace of Cakes star Duff Goldman, who offered to bake a cake for the couple.

The Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries has since launched an investigation to see whether the bakery violated state law.
