SEATTLE — Animal rights groups are offering a $5,000 reward to find those responsible for allegedly throwing a small toy poodle from the Alaskan Way Viaduct.

According to Anne Graves, the manager of field services at the Seattle Animal Shelter, a witness spotted a small toy poodle coming through an air vent from the Viaduct  around 11:10 a.m. Sunday. The dog landed on concrete, and witnesses took the dog to an area veterinarian. The dog suffered a broken toenail and walks with a limp but was “miraculously unscathed,” Graves said. It was transported to the Seattle Animal Shelter after two days at the vet.

Graves said the witnesses did not see the dog thrown from the car, but that was most likely the case given the position of the dog’s fall. Law enforcement officials are looking for suspects.

PETA is offering the reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the “violent act,” PETA Director Martin Mersereau said.

Anyone with information on the case is encouraged to contact the Seattle Animal Shelter at 206-386-4288 or visit

It is entirely possible that the poodle was riding in back seat of car with the window down and got excited and jumped out. I had a Toy Fox Terrier that did that once. Thankfully I was in a parking lot and going fairly slowly and he was not badly injured. Learned my lesson not to have the window down when he was in car. Just saying,”don’t convict the pet owner until you have the facts.” If he/she did purposely throw poor dog off, then put them in jail and throw away the key!
