SEATTLE -- The city council voted Monday night to institute a ban on smoking in Lynnwood city parks; the ban passed 6-0 with one councilmember absent, the Everett Herald reported.

The ban makes Lynnwood one of five other Snohomish County cities that have instituted such smoking bans in public places, the Herald said. Other cities include Marysville, Lake Stevens, Bothell and Sultan.

A violation of the ban could cost up to $209, police said.

Councilman Sid Roberts told the Herald that he wanted the ban because he was "disappointed" at smokers and cigarette butts in city parks and said he hopes other cities adopt similar bans.

"It's not so much about the fine," he told the paper. "The issue was more just the principal of the matter."
