New library streaming service compared to Netflix, but free

SEATTLE -- The Seattle Public Library recently entered the streaming video realm, throwing its hat into the ring with other powerhouse services such as Netflix, Hulu Plus and HBO Go.

But the library's new streaming system, called Hoopla, has one hugely popular characteristic up its sleeve:

It's free.

The service offers more than 10,000 videos, 250,000 albums and a variety of television shows for all Seattle Library users. Free streaming is available on computers, tablets and smartphone devices, and allows members access to the library's complete catalog of movies and shows for up to six days. Audiobooks are also available for 21 days. Hoopla does not have any advertisements, and get new content weekly, according to the website.  Users can also download movies and music directly to their phone or device, unlike Netflix or Hulu.

Hoopla does come up short in some ways, though. The Seattle Times reported that new and hip content on Hoopla is limited, and consumers are restricted to older movies and TV shows. Users are also limited to 20 rentals per month.

A library pin number and Internet is all users need to sign up for the service.
