cal.anderson.parkSEATTLE — A 28-year-old man convicted of third-degree rape in 2006 was being held in the King County Jail Tuesday for investigation of rape of a homeless woman Monday night in Seattle’s Cal Anderson Park, it was reported.

According to the Seattle Times, the suspect, a Level 2 sex offender, was convicted of third-degree rape in 2006 in Yakima County and is listed as “non-compliant” on the King County Sheriff’s Office sex offender registry. He is being held in the King County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail, the newspaper said.

A witness told police he was walking through the park at about 9 p.m. Monday when he noticed a woman passed out on the grass, just north of the park’s restrooms. He saw a man standing over her and then lying down beside her, thrusting his hand inside her pants, according to a probable cause document obtained by the Times.

The man then undid his pants and began moving his body in an apparent sex act, the statement says. After other transients yelled, the man fled the park, according to the statement. He was later arrested.

According to the documents, the homeless woman had no memory of being sexually assaulted and was shocked when she realized her pants had been pulled down.
