SEATTLE -- The Puyallup School District is considering selling advertising spots to boost revenue, The News Tribune reported.

The school board held a study session on the subject last month and seems open to considering advertising on sports score boards and selling the naming rights for athletic facilities. Board members have made it pretty clear they want to avoid commercial advertising in school hallways.

For the proposal to move forward, the school district will need to create a policy to govern advertising, sponsorships and related issues, the Tribune reported. The district's chief operations officer, Rudy Fyles, said the policy would have to address certain legal issues -- opening school property to advertising could create issues related to free speech. The district would have to consider how a policy would apply to controversial messages as well as commercial ones, according to Fyles.
