Documents allegedly detail Alan Smith's bizarre behavior, confession

BOTHELL, Wash. -- Snohomish County sheriff's detectives allege Alan Smith, a Bothell man accused of brutally killing his estranged wife, admitted the killing to a friend.

The allegations come to light in lengthy court documents released by the Snohomish County Prosecutor's Office. Prosecutors detail Smith's allegedly bizarre actions prior to the killing, such as purchasing full body protective suits, poorly explained hand wounds, his alleged desire to make his estranged wife disappear and his admitting the killing to a friend.

The documents also reveal Smith's bizarre public sexual behavior with his live-in girlfriend.

Smith was arrested for first-degree murdger and Thursday. He is being held in Snohomish County Jail. The 37-year-old is the only suspect in the gruesome murder of his estranged wife, Susann Smith. Her body was found at her Bothell home on Feb. 12, with more than 20 sharp and blunt force wounds to the head.

Smith and his current girlfriend publicly maintain his innocence.

According to prosecutors, an unnamed friend received a call from Smith on June 23 asking to meet. The pair met in a Starbucks parking lot off of south Lake Union, and Smith allegedly asked the friend for spiritual guidance. The friend said the christian philosophy required repentance and healing, and confession of sins. Smith nodded and said he "felt trapped by tornadoes all around him." The friend asked if Smith had anything to do with his wife's death, and Smith allegedly said "yes," before breaking down and crying.

Prior to the alleged confession, police found unexplained bloody footprints in Susann Smith's home. Police believe Smith was upset he lost child custody hearings with his estranged wife.
