Five infant deaths, 92 injuries prompt recall of baby recliner

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The deaths of five infants and dozens of injuries have led federal regulators to stop the sales of a popular baby recliner.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission said it has received dozens of reports involving the “Nap Nanny” and “Nap Nanny Chill” products since 2009. The CPSC announced the company that makes them, Baby Matters, had agreed to the government’s terms to end legal proceedings, stemming from an administrative complaint filed in December. That’s when four major retailers, Amazon.com, Buy Buy Baby, Diapers.com and Toys R Us/Babies R Us pulled their Baby Matters products.

The CPSC says four infants died in the ‘Nap Nanny Generation Two’ recliners and a fifth death involved in the ‘Chill’ model. There were 92 reports of infants hanging or falling over the edge of the products.

Between 2009 and 2012, 165,000 were sold for $130. People who bought them are told to contact the retailer for instructions on how to get a refund. However, Baby Matters is no longer in business. The CPSC wants consumers to immediately get rid of the products to make sure they aren’t used again.
