Buyer beware: Cars damaged during Sandy wash up in Washington

SEATTLE – The Better Business Bureau (BBB) and Washington state Attorney General’s Office recently issued a consumer alert, warning buyers that cars damaged during Hurricane Sandy are showing up for sale in Washington.

According to the alert, it’s common for con-artists to clean up totaled cars and try to resell them, regardless of the flooding damage. The cars may look normal, the BBB said,  but there are almost always serious problems with the vehicles, including mildew and corroded wires that can lead to electrical failure.

The organizations are urging potential car buyers to research the title and vehicle identification numbers before purchase. Experts said other things to remember are:

-Test drive the car to check its operation condition

-Check the gauges to make sure everything is in good working order

-Complete a visual inspection for any flood damage or ill-fitting body parts

-Check it out with your mechanic
