VIDEO: Hundreds watch implosion of 11-story building

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) – Hundreds of people turned out Sunday to watch an abandoned building on Governors Island imploded with dynamite Sunday to make room for a new park.

The massive implosion lasted about 10 seconds as 200 pounds of explosives were used to bring the 11-story building down.

The city will construct a 30-acre park that will include baseball and soccer fields, while providing a better view of the Statue of Liberty from the island.

The building has been used since 1996 and use to house Coast Guard families.

Sunday's implosion was the first in New York City in over a decade.
