Former Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin has accepted an invitation to speak at the 2013 Republic High School graduation on June 1 in Ferry County.
Palin will speak to 27 graduating seniors, their families and others in the typically small-town event. According to a statement released by the school, Palin agreed to serve as the commencement speaker after an extensive campaign was waged by Senior Class President Tyler Weyer.
Weyer and other interested students wrote letters, emails, tweets and composed a Facebook page in an attempt to lure the sharp-talking former governor. Principal Shawn Anderson called the campaign to secure Palin as the commencement speaker “dedicated.”
“We confer a special thank you to senior class president Tyler Weyer for his dedicated work in securing this year’s 2013 class speaker and recognize the Republic School District staff and community in supporting the senior class goal of realizing this once-in-a-lifetime event,” Anderson said.
Republic High School boasts a 109-member student body. The ceremony will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. June 1 at the Republic High School Gymnasium.
