transgenderDENVER — A prominent transgender rights group announced Wednesday that it has filed a discrimination complaint in Colorado on behalf of a first-grader who was born a boy but identifies as a girl.

Last December, school officials at Fountain-Fort Carson School District told Coy Mathis’ parents that their child could no longer use the girls’ bathroom at Eagleside Elementary.

That shocked her parents, said her mother, Kathryn Mathis.

Coy was born with male sex organs but has, since she could express herself, identified as female. The child had gotten through kindergarten with no problems and no complaints from anyone at the school, Mathis said.

The mother was flanked at a press conference at the Colorado Capitol in Denver by her husband, Jeremy, and four other children.

Really parents? You’re letting your child dictate how they identify themselves? My five year old thinks she’s a pony, but I’m not going to stick her in a stable. Good grief, talk about a face palm moment.

  • Beth

He may identify as a girl, be he has boy genitalia and does not belong in the young girls restroom. When he is an adult then he can do whatever he pleases

    I agree with Beth.
    He is a boy.
If they want him to be treated as a girl then get him an operation to change out the parts he was born with, to make him appear to be a girl not just dress like one.
But they should consider the fact that young minds are unpredictable and may suddenly change without notice.
The parents should be parents and don't expect others to adapt to their child's abnormal behavior. Why on earth does he need to use the girls bathroom?
Does he sit down to urinate?
Maybe home schooling would work better for the family.

So long as he has the male parts he needs to be using the boys bathroom…
I agree home schooling might be a better option for the time being. Who knows he might just be going through a phase and later on decide he wants to be a boy again,,,

A transgender 1st grader? give me a break! This child should have been taken from his parents years ago. Let me guess, being raised by a homosexual couple?!?

  • Brynn Dahlquist

Why does anyone care? Is there someone watching the child go to the bathroom? Why should I have any intervention about someone else's elimination regardless of their age?

I get having the right to allow your children to be who they want to be but lets get real.. A 6yr old has NO clue what transgender is, if the parents want to indulge him great but why the hell should I be forced to explain to my 6yr old why a boy is not only dressing like a girl but using the girls restroom. We have to teach our children about sex but never at 6 because someone wants to get rich exploiting their son. If rules offend you then home school,
