6 Washington athletes headed to Special Olympics World Winter games

OlympicsSEATTLE — Six athletes from Washington will be part of the 151-person U.S. Olympic team headed to PyeongChang, South Korea to compete in the Special Olympics World Winter games from Jan. 29- Feb 5.

All six athletes from Washington qualified to compete in a skiing event. The athletes are:

  • · Zachery Nelson, Alpine Skiing, Pasco
  • · Ben Green, Cross Country Skiing, Seattle
  • · Heather Comer, Alpine Skiing, Spokane Valley
  • · Michelle Stedman, Cross Country Skiing, Lewiston ID
  • · Michelle Jay, Cross Country Skiing, Sammamish
  • · David Bishop, Cross Country Skiing, Seattle

The athletes left Thursday morning for South Korea following a Special Olympics Celebration Send Off at the SeaTac airport. The Special Olympics World Winter games will feature competition in alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, figure skating, snowboarding and speed skating, among other sports.

The Special Olympics World Games is held every two years and features athletes from more than 170 countries.
