Seahawks come from behind to beat Redskins, RGIII 24-14

WASHINGTON --It didn't look good early on for the Hawks.

The Seahawks fell behind to the Washington Redskins 14-0 in the first quarter on two consecutive touchdown drives led by the Redskins' star quarterback Robert Griffin III.

But a strong second half, led by the Hawks' own rookie quarterback Russell Wilson, was enough to secure a 24-14 victory over the Redskins Sunday at FedEx Field in Washington, giving the Hawks their first road playoff victory since 1983.

In a game that featured three rookie quarterbacks throughout, it was Seahawks defense that largely became the focal point. The defense, failing to stop RGIII on two consecutive drives, left Hawks fans flustered and wondering if the road playoff drought would continue early on.

But after the initial drives, the defense allowed just 70 yards of Redskins offense.

And the Redskin's defense, gradually worn down by an always poised Wilson, allowed 24-consecutive points to the Hawks.

The Seahwaks took time to gather speed. Steven Hauschka, playing with an ankle injury, helped put the Hawks on the board with a 32-yard field goal in the second quarter. Fullback Michael Robinson caught a 4-yard pass from Wilson with 4:45 left in the second quarter, and Huaschka closed out the first half with a 29-yard field goal to put the Hawks within one.

The Seahawks offense stumbled coming back from the first half when runningback Marshawn Lynch fumbled the ball in the Red Zone. But Lynch made up for his mistake later in the fourth, running for a 27-yard touchdown with 7:20 left to give the Hawks their first lead of the game. The touchdown run was helped on a downfield block from Wilson, who said after the game that he loves to block for his teammate.

"Marshawn always tells me, 'Russ, I got your back,'" Wilson said. "I let him know I have his back, too.'"

When the Redskins got the ball back after the touchdown drive, RGII, a Rookie-of-the-Year candidate who had been hobbled all game by a bad knee, fell to the turf and was taken out of the game. The Redskins back-up quarterback Kirk Cousins struggled, and the Hawks cruised to the late victory.

RGIII finished 10-for-19 for 84 yards and two touchdowns. Wilson finished the game 15-for-26 with 187 yards and one touchdown.

Dependable all-star Lynch overcame a sluggish start to rush for 131 yards on 19 carries and one touchdown.

The Hawks head to Atlanta Sunday to face the Falcons (13-3). The game is scheduled for 10 a.m. local time on Q13 FOX.
