Gun control debate heads to Olympia

This is an archived article and the information in the article may be outdated. Please look at the time stamp on the story to see when it was last updated.

grandmaOLYMPIA — In the aftermath of the tragic shooting in Connecticut last week, many, including the President, are looking at new federal laws intended to prevent future gun violence.

Here in Washington, the same conversation is starting among state lawmakers, including an assault weapons ban.

“These are military assault weapons,” said Sen. Adam Kline (D-Seattle), who is outgoing chair of the Senate Judiciary committee that makes decisions regarding gun legislation. “This is murder of children. It’s allowed because we allow about anyone to have guns.”

The new chair of the Judiciary Committee is expected to be Republican Mike Padden of Spokane Valley. He downplayed the effect of such a law.

“They have an assault weapons ban in Connecticut,” Padden said. “Obviously, that didn’t stop the killer.”

Padden is skeptical that banning assault weapons or of closing the gun show loophole, which allows some gun purchases without background checks, could be effective.

“It’s not to say that nothing can be done,” he said.  “It’s gotta be something that is evidenced based, and so far, you know, I haven’t really seen that.

Padden does, however, favor stiffer sentences for criminals who use guns.

For years gun control legislation has been stalled in Olympia, even though Democrats, who typically supports such measures, have been in control. Some suburban and rural members of the party haven’t been supportive.

“I don’t believe the legislature by itself will act,” said Sen. Jeanne Kohl-Welles (D-Seattle). “There needs to be an impetus from the community and from constituencies of legislator all across the state.”

Kohl-Welles will continue to push gun control legislation, something she has done for nearly 17 years.

“When it gets down to 20 children being mowed down, you can’t any longer say it’s not the gun it’s the person,” she said.

One local leader is tired of waiting for Olympia to act. She’s ready to go directly to the people.

“Here’s an opportunity to do what Washington state does best, which is an initiative campaign,” said Tina Podlodowski, a former Seattle City Councilmember. “We don’t have to wait. We don’t have to deal with partisan gridlock. We can actually do this ourselves. So, why not turn this around for something that is incredibly positive for all our citizens.”

Padden believes there’s at least some areas where lawmakers are in agreement.

“One thing that we are quite unified on,” he said, “is the need to really look at our mental health funding and policies, and I know that that could be a highlight for a number of committees.”

Amen to that, if the parents were not crappy parents and gave their child more love and compassion stuff like this would never happen in the world!!!!!!

  • Numbered days

It's capitalism, money is thicker than blood.

Just like tobacco and alcohol industry, no matter how many people die the money machine rolls on..

      • jake

how about the 22 children in china slashed with a knife some may not live. did a gun ban stop that no was he still able to inflict massive damage yes. there are ugly people in this world and no amount of laws will stop them. ban guns people will still killand honestly the cops never make it in time . not there fault .

  • Michelle J Moon

I think making it tougher to but funs would be good. Like an example, age being 21 for all guns, proof of having a safety box or locks for the guns or not being able to buy a gun at all without a C.W.P. Just ideas.

  • Citizen98107

Many people are tired of the Second Amendment argument. When the 2nd was written 221 years ago, it took a nimble fingered fellow almost a minute to load one shot into his musket and fire it. Times have changed and the laws need a tune-up. I don't believe the British are about to invade.

    • C-Mo

Many people are sick of the complete lack of logic behind the banning of "Assault Weapons" which is by definition, a farce, because "Assault Weapons are select fire, which are already banned by rules of the NFA. Many People are tired of a group of naive crybabies that believe the police are always going to be able to save them, and that Random Acts of Violence couldn't possibly happen to them.

These "Assault weapons" (Assault weapons are select fire, ILLEGAL in WA and just about everywhere else due to the NFA, and are responsible for not even 5% of violent gun crime in America) are not even close to relevant in stopping these public massacres. The Millions of responsible gun owners are not the problem. Criminals and psychopaths with stolen handguns and the occasional rifle are the issue.

Why can't the left realize that only law abiding citizens follow laws. If all of the responsible american gun owners are forced to surrender, hide, or destroy their self defense tools… Then what will stop criminals from doing whatever the heck they want with their illegal firearm? Who will protect you/us when the police are too busy with a surge in violent crime to protect you? Will you still feel like you were creating positive change? When your family falls victim to a home invasion because the scumbags are certain you dont have anything to defend yourself with? When armed robbery becomes commonplace, and you're afraid to leave your home anyways?

I carry everyday and keep semi automatic "black rifles at home in a half ton vault to protect my family, my friends, complete strangers, YOU, and lastly myself from random acts of violence. How dare you try to rob me of that right without any reason other than a need to eliminate things you do not understand. If you want to be a victim, fine by me, but don't think for a second that you're gonna be saving any lives by taking away others' ability to prevent that grim possibility.

Dont you realize the fear of a well-informed, well-practiced, well-prepared citizen carrying a concealed firearm is actually a deterrent that stops these crimes from happening more than they already have been? Do you not realize that the media frenzy is what supplies the gratification and immortality that these pathetic cowards seek by committing these senseless acts of violence? Why do you think these things happen in schools and movie theaters, etc? They are either "GUN-FREE zones or darn close to it. All take place where it is less likely to have a CPL holder, carrying a concealed firearm, in attendance. Psychopaths and Criminals are to blame. Poor regulation of the laws I follow to acquire my self defense tools are the problem. Criminals and Crazies will ALWAYS have access to guns no matter how many responsible Americans you strip of their right to defend themselves with relevant tools and training. When will the left understand this?

For the record I am neither left nor right. I believe in the constitution and for this discussion the 2nd amendment. Which protects us from not only each other, but from tyranny and oppression. It was 2nd on the list of things to do of some of the greatest minds of their time. It is based on the principle that we all have a birthright to protect the lifves of ourselves and loved ones.

    • Kris Thomas

I agree, just like the First Admendment. Words are powerful and can move people to do horrible things like start wars or take away peoples rights. Back in the day you had to stand on a soapbox, the founders never envisioned that one person could be heard by millions from the comfort of home. I think its time for a tune-up and common sense change to the laws…mandatory speech training, maximum limit of 10 listeners, registration of ideas.

Banning guns is not the answer to the problem we have with gun violence in this country. It's like putting a band-aid on a gaping wound. We need to look at all aspects of the problem from violent video games that glorify shooting people that desensitize kids to the ramifications of pulling the trigger to recognizing mental health issues. Providing proper mental health care and not stigmatizing people who get treatment. We need to allow parents to discipline their children without fear of the state paying them a visit and making life hell for them. We need to encourage parents to be just that, parents not their child's best friend. They will have hundreds of friends in their life and need you to be their parent. We need to stop being a society with a sense of entitlement and the need for instant gratification. No is not a dirty word. We need to teach our children values, common sense and that there are consequences for doing bad things. We need to stop handling juvenile criminals with kid gloves and hand out real punishments not slaps on the wrist. We need to stop making the people that do these types of crimes famous by keeping the stories in the news for days even weeks. Personally i don't think the perpetrators name should ever be mentioned. I could go on a lot longer but have this rant out of my system, thanks for reading it.

    • REAL Citizen

You just made the point. How will making firearms or any type of them illegal stop scumbags from using them to kill?

      so naive. disgusting really.

  • guest

No matter what laws you put on guns, criminals will always find a way to get their hands on them, just like with illegal drugs, they'll go to the black market… because criminals DON'T obey the law!! Banning or making stricter laws on guns does NOT make things safer, it actually makes things more dangerous… it disarms the innocent. I bet if one of those teachers at that school had a gun, they probably could have shot back and wounded/killed him before he killed another person.

And why did/do dictatorial government use strict gun laws/bans? Its hard to fight a tyrannical government when its citizens don't have equivalent firepower… which is why our Founding Fathers allowed the citizens to keep and bear arms.

"Firearms stand next in importance to the constitution itself. They are the American people's liberty teeth and keystone under independence … from the hour the Pilgrims landed to the present day, events, occurences and tendencies prove that to ensure peace security and happiness, the rifle and pistol are equally indispensable … the very atmosphere of firearms anywhere restrains evil interference — they deserve a place of honor with all that's good."
    George Washington

QUote and citation please. I know that a well-regulated militia is mentioned in regard to allowing the people to protect themselves from a tyrannical gov't, are you really saying that the 2nd amendment only allows us to defend ourselves from dictatorship and not from evil on our streets and in our homes?

P.S. Citizen, you are a moron. Where in god's name does Guest quote the 2nd Amendment?
You are leaving a smelly trail of naivety an cowardice all along this comments section.

If you took all the children that die in a year due to gun shots including automatic weapons, is a sliver compared to the amount of deaths of children due to alcohol related deaths or even starvation. WAKE UP ITS ABOUT CONTROL! If a man killed someone with a pencil, does it become federal law not to own a pencil? Sounds like a rediculious question right? So does any kind of blame on the gun no matter what kind it was. Need to take a close look at the killer, and skip the crap. Grand ma needs to take a closer look at alcohol related deaths of children take anothe sip of her wine and STFU

      • paula r

2,793 in 2009 by gun violence:

5000 die each year from alcohol related causes and in 2008 more than 190,000 visited emergency rooms for alcohol related injury's:

finding specific numbers of children that die in the US from starvation each year is not an easy thing. the UN says about 200 children in the US die from malnutrition every year. if you expand the numbers worldwide then yes the number of children that die from starvation and alcohol related causes far out-way the number of kids killed by guns.

          • paula r

your right alcohol only kills them 2 or 3 at a time to the tune of 5000 deaths a year. you asked for the links to support the persons statement and i gave them to you.

here are a few more factoids about children deaths for you. around 60 little children are killed by guns every year. around 160 die in bicycle accidents. approximately 600 to 800 die as pedestrians. approximately 1000 die from drowning and around 1800 die in automobile accidents.
so maybe we should ban little children from riding in cars, swimming, bathing, walking and riding bicycles. stupid idea isn't it, but it would save the lives of a lot more little children than banning guns would.
oh, and just so you don't have to ask this is where i got my facts from.:

  • sjr54

Someone could easily kill or wound 20 people walking through a crowded shoppin mall stabbing people. less noise, more discreet, reaction time for people to realize what just happened would be slightly longer.

It doesnt matter what sort of weapon is used. What matters is the individual behind that weapon. If People make a movement to ban guns, they are close minded and not all that intelligent. Look at the big picture, not at the one part. I don't go anywhere with out my fire arm, unless a sign says i can't have it. even then, sometimes i "dont" see the sign. and CPL's are sure nice. I am a law abiding citizen and i will not be left defenseless against some prick with a fire arm.

  • jkl1978

I have no desire to own firearms, but it really is a shame that the Second Amendment is even up for "debate." The language used was clear, and the best people can do is to play word games to conjure up a meaning that fits their political goals. Private ownership of firearms was meant to keep the government honest… There are obviously other issues at play when a mentally ill young man murders 20 plus people. Are we to dishonor the victims' memory by blaming their deaths on an inanimate object? There are plenty of examples in the world of what happens when guns are banned entirely. Crime temporarily goes down, but violent crime remains stagnant or increases. Is this worth giving up rights men and women have fought and died for? Of course it isn't, but people around here would gladly do so, out of complete ignorance.

It's a shame that people don't think for themselves anymore and blindly adopt a political party's platform wholeheartedly. Do some research without any predetermined biases and come to a rational decision on the issue.

      • Mark

The militia is a result of the right to bear arms, not a limiting to militia personnel. without the population haveing guns any where at any time, the formation of a proper militia cant be raised.

The term militia , or irregular army, is commonly used today to refer to a military force composed of ordinary citizens to provide defense, emergency law enforcement, or paramilitary service, in times of emergency without being paid a regular salary or committed to a fixed term of service. It is a polyseme with multiple distinct but related meanings. Legal and historical meanings of militia include:

Defense activity or service, to protect a community, its territory, property, and laws.

The entire able-bodied population of a community, town, county, or state, available to be called to arms.

A subset of these who may be legally penalized for failing to respond to a call-up.

A subset of these who actually respond to a call-up, regardless of legal obligation.

A private, non-government force, not necessarily directly supported or sanctioned by its government.

An official reserve army, composed of citizen soldiers. Called by various names in different countries such as; the Army Reserve, National Guard, or state defense forces.

The national police forces in several former communist states such as the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact countries, but also in the non-aligned SFR Yugoslavia. The term was inherited in Russia, and other former CIS countries. See: Militia (Police).

A select militia is composed of a small, non-representative portion of the population, often politicized.

Notice this one thing: these are all occurring in so-called "gun free zones", the shooter's haven where he knows there will be nobody armed to keep him from attaining his goals. Every parent who lost a child in that tragedy should sue the school for failing to protect their child by providing such a haven for the criminally insane, and if you really want to make a difference to protect the sheeple, write legislation banning gun free zones to those legally licensed to carry. Instill fear in the psychopaths that they may very possibly end up in a room full of armed citizens.

  • Guest

^That! I can’t agree more! The Oregon mall=gun free zone, Colorado movie theater=gun free zone, our nation’s schools=gun free zones. Make it harder for those psychos to get guns, without infringing on the god given rights of the law abiding citizen.

        • REAL CITIZEN

An perfect example of the responsible, informed, American gun owner. I would have shot personally, I figure if I risk hitting someone accidentally, in an effort to prevent someone from killing several more, that is an acceptable risk. But I totally get the reasoning behind holding fire. I carry everyday, and practice speed and precision religiously using my concealed carry configuration to make sure I am ready for whatever horrors may happen. But I know to escape and evade first, fight ABSOLUTELY LAST. I just couldnt allow someone to kill innocents in front of me though. No way. And I wish the anti-gunners would realize that they shouldnt take away my option to defend not just myself and my loved ones, but them as well.

  • Guest

And you have more thumbs down than everybody put together.
The Constitution of the United States is a god given right. The second amendment is part of it.
Also see the Declaration of Independence, pay attention to the part that says
". . . endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights"

Without facts you resort to name calling.

    I don't debate with children

  • firebird1

Like everyone else said guns don't kill people. People kill people. If some one is hell bent on killing a bunch of people they will find a way to do it. Remember people are sick. Would you rather have someone go into a public place with a sword and kill people cause I know I don't

  • Dave in Edmonds

Adam Kline is an idiot. "Anti-tank guns are available"? That is one of his first statements. Seriously? We are supposed to let someone who believes that make ANY decisions for our state government?

  • Guest

Need more proof that Kline is an idiot? A direct quote from him: "I would be
happy to ban the use of the internal combustion engine off-road, by anyone
without a handicapped sticker, subject to a stiff fine. "
Who votes for morons like this?

  • Ciitzen98107

Even when Charlton Heston delivered the The Ten Commandments way back then (before Planet of the Apes), there's nothing in God's message requiring gun ownership or being armed to kill your neighbor.

    • David

Yes that maybe true in the movies, or at least that one, it didnt go down that way on planet of the and they didnt have phyco paths running into a theater and killing people. Lucky i wasnt there I would have dropped him like a bad habbit before he got his 3rd shot off!

  • Big E

Where is the quote by Sen. Adam Kline (D-Seattle) about them being anti-tank weapons like it showed on tv? Last time I checked my Ar-15 is not fully automatic (like the military) and I cannot shoot through a tank at all….oh and the I have never seen armor piercing ammo at cabela's or any other gun store I have been shopping at for the last 6 years.

Please remember, There have been a lot of people who have died defending the constitution that all of you cowards are so willing to discard. This is why inspite of our childern being shot, there is opposition to your (oxymoronic) "Sensible Gun laws." Why don't you lobby against the first amemdment as well? After all shouldn't you let the government do the speaking for you?

  • Doc

I think it’s funny how closed minded and dumb some of you people are. I’m a gun owner, in not a “Rambo” I collect them for their history. I also own a couple for home and personal protection. I feel that if you choose to carry a firearm then it’s your choice. Strict gun Laws will never make us “safer” and any political chub sucker thinks so, should by all means be removed from office. It will only inhibit the law abiding citizens the means to protect their family, property and their life. You notice all the shootings have been on property that bans people from carrying. Criminals look for victims of opportunity, where they can inflict the most damage before being apprehended also what targets provide the most physiological impact. Which by the way are schools. What if the CT killer had used a home made bomb using fertilizer and fuel like the OK city bombing. Would government be pursuing stricter laws for purchasing fuel and fertilizer? In china a crazed guy went to a school and stabbed 20 students. So it goes to show that if someone decides to kill they will find a way. The government would love to disarm the average citizen because then they could do what they wanted without fear of reprisal. So yeah sit back let guns be taken out of the hands of citizen, I just hope that one day your not in a place where an average citizen could have saved you or your family had they been armed..

But that is the farce in itself, "Assault Weapons" aren't even legal to own in America. It is a false label put on semi-automatic sporting rifles with a detachable magazine to help the Left get rid of the guns that look "scary" or "tactical." Please look up the numbers of gun deaths or crimes involving an "assault weapon." How can any rational person look at the figures and come to this conclusion? How can you objectively look at what is happening, and decide to ban a weapon class that is not responsible for the problem, while deceptively labeling/classifying it as another weapon class, that is even less responsible for the problem and 100% less legal in our country already!

If we can ban a type of weapon, and directly violate the Constitution in the process, then what stops the gov't from denying our FIRST Amendment rights some day? I'm sure it will be for a reason similar to this political atrocity. Why are you allowing the wool to be pulled over your eyes? This is the first step, and you all are gonna be the ones who put the machine into motion.

Meanwhile authorities and lawmakers continue to allow giant lapses in the enforcement of laws designed to keep THE REAL PROBLEM UNDER CONTROL (cheap, concealable, deadly, handguns in the hands of those whom are ineligable.)

  • MarcB

Trying to solve this problem with gun control laws is the same as trying to cure cancer with an asparin! We have a huge hole in our society when it comes to services for the mentally ill and those parents who care for them. EVERYTHING the shooter did last Friday was already illegal, from stealing his mother's guns to transporting them, to taking them on school property, and of course, shotting them. The only thing he did legal that day was wake up. Just about every action after that he committed a crime. Did that stop him? Nope. What are the new laws that would have made him say "No, I won't steal my mother's guns". It is a fantasyland belief that we can get rid of guns in our society. It will never happen.

People can say all they want that that we need to stop talking about its not the gun, its the person. Well, why? That's the fact. Just to test my theory that an gun doesn't commit acts of violence, I took my handgun out of the safe last night and spent 20 minute berating it, insulting it, talking about its mother–well, I didn't do that becuase it doesn't have one. I told hit how ugly people thought it was and many people thought it should die. It didn't even get mad at me. It certainly didn't shoot me, laying their by itself on the couch.

The results of the experiment is that guns can't do anything by themself. It takes a person to kill, the gun is just the tool.

The real problem is the lack of giving a crap about the mentally ill or those who take care of the mentally ill in this country!

  • Generation X

Generally, The weapon of choice is a pistol. Something small and Hidden. Even if guns were banned, it wont get them off the street. Drugs are illegal and People still get them and use them. Same goes for guns. IF they are banned they are only banned from law abiding citizens. Criminals or Overly stressed individual will go out of there way to get them. It would take decades if not a hundred years to get guns off the streets.

  • roloaddict

He drove a Honda to the school and probaby had Lucky Charms for breakfast. Neither Honda or Post will pull thier products off the market in a case of contagious guilt.
Our society has gone just as nuts as the shooter. We have lost the abiity and the will to look evil and mental illness straght in the eye and see that it is wholly responsibe. Instead we blame inanimate objects like our Neanderthal forefathers did for thier misfortunes. Lets all put on our big boy pants, bury our dead and recognize that unless we lock up everyone, we will have this. More people, more of this. Give people the tools to protect themselves, punish those that mis-behave and commit the ones that don't know the difference. Meanwhile I am going down to Dick's (burgers) and get a Deluxe before someone tries to ban them because 400,000 die due to Heart Disease every year. That is if i can eat after whatching yet another poitical mouth breather push thier agenda while using murdered children as a backdrop.

  • Guest

The solution is pretty simple, mandatory taser carry for teachers. non lethal solution.

because everyone knows if you ban assault rifles, someone will just get a pistol. ban all guns and someone will just make a bomb.

Arm all teachers with tasers and you have a resonable solution and large deterent.

  • Guest

The general public is tired of the self righteous NRA and its non-solutions. Gun owners aren't there to save the day like a John Wayne movie, so quit spewing that fantasy. Don't go postal at work today!

The "general public" ??? ahhh liberals… when will you realize that generalizations NEVER solve anything. How many times in your life have you complained about a privilege of your's being taken away due to the stupidity of a few? Several I'm sure. Next, you should launch a campaign to strip our right to a fair trial by a jury of our peers because OJ got away with murder! Then get free speech out of here because the violent result of the Seattle WTO protests. Or you could ban "assault cheeseburgers" because American's can't help themselves to not be fat f***s. Ban Cars because people drive them drunk and kill people with them. So often that is the leading cause of death in young people. and a serious statistic.

We don't ban cars because people drive them drunk, so how can you ban a gun because crazy scumbags use them for offense rather than defense? How dare you all try to slowly strip me of my right to own a viable option to defend myself with, against those who would do me/my loved ones harm for no reason at all besides personal gain, satisfaction, or insanity!

Automobiles are vital to the function of our country, and personal transportation is in many ways a life or death matter. I need to get to work, or get to a hospital quickly in an emergency, etc. I view firearms in a similar light. Guns are tools vital to my survival and safety in a country that is FULL of them.

The only thing deterring widespread gun violence increase is the fact that we all could possibly be toting a weapon under our jacket or in our purse. Which scares Johnny Scumbag into only pulling his gun out with intent to massacre in "gun free" zones where he can be safe for long enough to deal death until he is satisfied. Wanna make a difference and save children's lives? eliminate gun-free zones from schools for those who are eligible and licensed for concealed carry. Then increase the training level required for such a license. Give the teachers and faculty the tools and ability to protect themselves and their students. Then the criminals will have no where to pull a gun without a significant risk of perforation. THAT is a reasonable solution. Not the bull you are blindly defending.
