Lakewood police fire on suspect

lightsbackgroundLAKEWOOD — A suspect believed to have stolen a car is in the hospital this morning after two Lakewood Police officers opened fire on him Sunday evening in Tacoma.

The two officers began pursuing the suspect at Gravelly Lake Drive and Interstate 5 shortly before 10 p.m.  They chased the vehicle northbound on I-5 until the vehicle exited at Portland Avenue and executed a PIT maneuver to bring the car to a halt.

After the car stopped, the suspect fired on the officers and the two officers returned fire. The suspect was hit and was transported to the hospital. His condition is unknown.

The two officers were not injured. They will be placed on paid administrative leave during an investigation into the incident.
