Blind Army Capt. Scott Smiley continues to serve

Army Capt. Scott Smiley graduated from West Point and was stationed at Fort Lewis before being blinded while serving in Iraq.

Now, the first blind officer on active duty in the military is serving his country at Gonzaga University's ROTC department.

Smiley, blinded in April 2005 when a car bomb blew up 25 yards from his vehicle, spoke at Bellevue Four Square Church Sunday. He said his Army values of loyalty, duty and selfless service helped him through rough times.

"I just really felt that I could really serve and give so much back even though I was still blinded and just that sense of responsibility wanted and gave me the desire to still serve," he said.

After he was blinded, Smiley went on to get an MBA from Duke University, write a book called "Hope Unseen" and even climbed Mount Rainier.
