activeShooterTrainingPUYALLUP, Wash. — More than 100 members of local law enforcement, fire and emergency management agencies are participating in an active-shooter exercise Thursday at the Washington State Fair Events Center.
The multi-agency drill comes the day after an officer-involved shooting at Westfield Southcenter Mall in Tukwila. The purpose of the drill is to improve communication among agencies during the response to a violent incident, officials said.
Participants will practice five situations: protocols for responding to violence, wound management, basic patrol breaching, explosive ordinance disposal identification and recognition, and school response guidelines. The event is co-sponsored by Pierce County Department of Emergency Management and the Pierce County Fire and Law Cooperative Training Committee.
The Department of Homeland Security is funding the exercise.
On Wednesday, a shoplifter was caught on a surveillance camera inside Nordstrom, police said. An officer confronted the suspect when he ran into the parking lot and into a car. Police said when the car charged the officer, the officer opened fire, hitting one of the suspects.  The officer was hit by the vehicle. Officers later cornered the vehicle in a dead-end, and a woman and two men were arrested.
It’s unclear which suspect was hurt.  The officer was not seriously injured.

TUKWILA — Police said one of its officers was forced to open fire Wednesday afternoon after a shoplifting suspect at Southcenter Mall tried to run him over.

Witnesses say it started about 12:45 this afternoon and the mall was full of shoppers. The shoplifting suspect got into a waiting car outside the mall. The officer ordered the driver of the car to stop, but the driver struck the officer with the car; the officer then fired at the car.

The suspects attempted to flee into a nearby Target parking lot, but it ended up being a dead-end and police arrested them. One of the two men who was hit by police gunfire was transported to Harborview Medical Center. His condition is unknown. Both men were taken into custody.

The officer who was struck by the vehicle was treated on the scene and was not transported to the hospital.

During the incident, shoppers inside Nordstrom were told to stay inside the store, which was locked down.

Shooting at Southcenter Mall

Mike Murphy with Tukwila police said they located a stolen car near Nordstrom at the mall and were questioning a woman near the car.

Meanwhile, another police officer saw a person who matched the description of the driver of the stolen car in another vehicle in the driveway west of Nordstrom.  The officer ordered the driver of the car to stop, but the driver struck the officer with the car; the officer then fired at the car.

The vehicle had two people inside it.
