TACOMA — The father of a 2-year-old Pierce County girl is now charged with her murder. Prosecutors say 26-year-old Salvador Sanchez-Orozco killed the child to get back at his estranged wife, and then he tried killing himself.

daveenaSanchez-Orozco pleaded not guilty in court Thursday afternoon.

Officials say he first tried killing himself back in January, and then again Wednesday after he strangled his daughter.

Salvador walked into the courtroom hanging his head. His wife’s family sat in the courtroom gallery, still visibly shaken by Wednesday’s tragic events.

“I think they ought to hang the sucker,” said Frank Lima, the child’s great-grandfather.  “A slow hang so he has to suffer and then let him go so he comes back, make him realize what he’s done.”

Police say Salvador called 911 from his Parkland apartment and told the operator that he killed his daughter, 2-year-old Daveena. He allegedly left a suicide note, saying he was going to take his daughter with him.

“It’s really shocking for everyone,” said Bonita Todd, Daveena’s aunt. “I just want everybody to know that nobody expected this.”

Lima said Salvador had been arguing with his wife but he still regularly visited with Daveena — even after a failed suicide attempt in January, after which he was involuntarily committed. He was released the next day, however.

Court documents allege Salvador made an unscheduled visit to his wife’s home in Graham on Feb. 11 and became upset when he discovered she was spending time with another man.

When he asked to take Daveena, the family agreed and Salvador returned to his apartment.

“We never thought he would do something like this,” said Lima. “If I had thought that, I wouldn’t have let him have Daveena.”

Daveena’s family has set up an online account to raise more than $7,000 to pay for her funeral.

Salvador’s estranged wife, Faye, was not in court for his arraignment.

Faye’s family said the couple would argue but they never thought he would hurt his little girl.

“I think Salvie loved Faye, but I don’t think he knew how to express it. And the only way he could express is it is lash out at her, and that’s the wrong way to do it,” said Lima. “He wouldn’t get help from anybody.”

Salvador is currently on an immigration hold because he’s from Mexico.

The Pierce County judge set his bail at $2 million.

TACOMA — A 26-year-old man was charged with killing his daughter by suffocation in a failed murder-suicide attempt that left residents a Tacoma apartment complex reeling Wednesday.

Salvador Sanchez-Orozco was charged with first-degree murder Tuesday in Pierce County Superior Court for squeezing his 2-year-old daughter to death Wednesday morning. He is scheduled to be arraigned in court at 1:20 p.m.

Sanchez-Orozco was arrested at the Woodmark apartment complex around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 2000 block of 96th Street South. Police said they found him hanging with a rope around his neck and oxygen cut off, his dead daughter lying nearbye.

Police believe the daughter was killed out of spite for the mother.

“The defendant murdered a child he’s supposed to protect,” said prosecutor Mark Lindquist. “This is domestic violence at its worst, killing a child to punish the mother.”

According to police, Sanchez-Orozco and his wife had been arguing on and off for weeks. He was involuntarily committed earlier this month after trying to strangle himself with a dog leash.

The mother and daughter moved out of the house, but Sanchez-Orozco would still periodically visit his child. It was during one of these visits that he strangled his daughter and again tried to kill himself. He allegedly left a suicide note saying he was going to kill himself and “take my daughter,” with him.

If convicted, Sanchez-Orozco could face life in prison.

TACOMA — A 2-year-old girl is found dead in Tacoma. Her father is now under arrest.  Pierce County sheriff’s deputies said he admitted that he killed her, and then they found him trying to kill himself.

“I’m shaking. It’s just terrible,” says Dorothy Aubrey.

She can’t believe the little girl who lived next door to her niece is dead.

“She was just learning to walk; in fact, my niece witnessed her first steps. She was telling me about it.”

Sheriff’s deputies say they came to the Woodmark apartments around noon today after getting a call from the girl’s father.

“He called 911, said he killed his baby and was going to kill himself,” says Pierce County detective Ed Troyer. “When we arrived, he had a dog collar around his neck, our deputies were able to cut it off and revive him.”

But it was too late to save the little girl.

“We believe the father intentionally squeezed the baby to death, suffocating the baby,” Troyer said.

Neighbors say the suspect’s wife had recently left him and taken the baby to live with her parents. But the two appeared to be on good terms.

“My niece was just over there having dinner with them two nights ago and everything seemed fine,” says Aubrey.

Deputies don’t know why the suspect did this, although he did have a run-in with them recently.

“We know we have a mental health issue with him from a month before when we involuntarily committed him,” says Troyer. “We don’t think that has anything to do with this.”

They hope to get some answers soon. But they know that won’t take away the pain for those who knew this young girl.

“It just tugs at everybody, because most of us have children. When you have to work cases with children, it’s heartbreaking.”

The child’s mother was contacted by family members and arrived while deputies were still investigating. Neighbors say she was distraught, collapsing on the ground when she was told that her baby was dead.

A Pierce County sheriff’s deputy said the suspect was cut down and revived. He then told police what had happened.

It was unclear how the child was killed, the deputy said, but blunt-force trauma was involved.

According to the Tacoma News Tribune, the father called 911 around 11 a.m. from the Woodmark Apartments to report he had killed his daughter and planned on killing himself.

The suspect had recently been released from a mental hospital.

The little girl’s mother was called to the apartments by police following the crime. She was distraught, but helping with the investigation, police said.
