Police: Suspect on loose after ramming patrol car, trying to run over Fircrest officer

FIRCREST, Wash. – Pierce County sheriff’s deputies and Fircrest police are looking for a suspect who rammed a Fircrest police car with his stolen truck and tried to run over a Fircrest officer Friday night, authorities said.

The Pierce County Sheriff's Department initially said that the suspect had fired shots at the officer, too, but later corrected a tweet to say the suspect did not fire any shots. But the officer did fire once at the fleeing truck.

The incident began when somebody called 911 to report a suspicious truck, and the officer tried to pull the truck over near Monterey Lane and Contra Costa Avenue.

The suspect rammed the patrol car and tried to run the officer over at 5:24 p.m., then drove off. The officer, who was not injured, fired one round at the truck, a white Ford F250 pickup, which was found abandoned later a few blocks away. The officer's single shot did hit the vehicle, but it wasn't known if the suspect had been hit, the sheriff's office said.

Pierce County sheriff's Detective Ed Troyer said the truck was stolen. He said it had switched license plates on it and a punched-out ignition. He said it had a lot of backpacks in it and what is believed to be stolen property, such as mail.

The sheriff's department urged people who live in the search area to stay inside and lock their doors -- and for the public to stay away.

There was a large police response in the area and a K-9 was being brought in to track the suspect, who was described as a white man in his 20s who was wearing a white T-shirt and jeans.
