3 teens killed, 1 hurt after car slams into semi parked near Alderwood Mall; identities released

LYNNWOOD, Wash. -- Three people were killed and another injured Wednesday morning after a car crashed into a parked semi-truck in Lynnwood.

According to the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office, the crash happened around 4 a.m. in the 16900 block of Alderwood Mall Parkway.  The car hit the semi with such force that it became wedged under the trailer and its top was sheared off.

The Snohomish County Sheriff's Office says two of the occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. Two others were rushed to the hospital, but one died on the way.

The only survivor, a 15-year-old girl, is being treated at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with undisclosed injuries.

Those killed were identified Thursday as Landon Staley, 16, of Everett; Travin Nelson-Phongphiou, 16, of Everett; and Mikayla Sorenson, 15, of Bothell. The cause of the death for each was listed as accident.

There was nobody in the semi at the time.

The Henry M. Jackson High School PTSA,  issued a statement: "This morning we learned three of our Jackson High students were involved in a fatal car accident. A Cascade High School student was also in the accident and is in stable condition in the hospital."

The Snohomish County Sheriff's Office said it is legal for trucks to park trailers in the designated parking areas along Alderwood Mall Parkway, but that the trailer was not parked in the correct direction, as the front of the trailer was facing the direction of oncoming traffic. "That is a civil parking infraction," the sheriff's office said.
