Police: 5 Marysville fires intentionally set; 38-year-old woman taken in custody

MARYSVILLE, Wash. -- Police took a 38-year-old woman into custody in connection with five fires that were allegedly set Wednesday afternoon around Marysville.

No injuries were reported.

Police said that at 2:11 p.m. Wednesday, officers assisted the Marysville Fire District with traffic control near a fire in an abandoned house in the 11000 block of State Avenue. Police said that while firefighters were attacking the house fire, a small brush fire started up to the west, across the street.

A third fire, west of the first two and among a pile of tires, garbage and other debris in a heavily wooded area, was then noticed, police said. A fourth and fifth fire were then started north and west of the others and closer to Interstate 5, police said.

Police began searching for a possible arsonist. An officer located a woman in the 3900 block of 116th Street that "had black soot on her face and hands" and who "clearly smelled like smoke," police said in a news release. The woman, a 38-year-old Marysville resident, was taken into custody just before 3:45 p.m., police said.

"The arrested woman had a warrant for her arrest for a 2017 Reckless Burning charge."

She was booked into the city jail on the warrant while detectives continued to investigate the fires.
