Police: 50-year-old jogger crossing road in marked crosswalk hit, killed by car in Silverdale

SILVERDALE, Wash. – A 50-year-old jogger who was crossing Greaves Way in a marked crosswalk was hit and killed by a car Friday morning, the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office said.

The victim was identified as Amy Marie Higgins, of Central Kitsap.

The sheriff's office said the driver, a 24-year-old man from East Bremerton, was interviewed at the scene by traffic investigators and released. The driver voluntarily provided a blood draw sample for toxicology testing, the sheriff's office said.

The accident occurred during darkness.

Officials said Higgins, who was wearing a reflective vest and carrying a flashlight, started to cross Greaves Way from the south, toward Old Frontier Road, when, a witness said, two vehicles approached from the south on Greaves Way -- one in the right-turn channel lane and a Chrysler sedan following behind in the thru lane. The Chrysler struck Higgins in the southbound thru lane.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The sheriff's office is investigating the accident and said vehicle speed calculations are pending.
