CAPTURED: WMW viewer tips lead to ID of suspect charged in Des Moines armed robbery

DES MOINES, Wash. -- Des Moines Police say Ian Mwangi has been charged with Robbery 1st degree for an armed robbery at the Shell station on South 272nd Street on Nov. 12, 2016.

“It took our detectives a little while to sort through all the tips but were actually able to identify the suspect from one of those tips. In the video. he was wearing a very distinctive Chicago Bulls sweatshirt. He discarded that when he fled the scene and we were able to recover it and it was sent for DNA testing and there were several DNA profiles on that shirt, which means several people wore it, but one of the profiles that came back was conclusively to him so that was also another piece of this puzzle that we were able to put together to show it was him that committed this robbery,” said Des Moines Police Commander Doug Jenkins.

Mwangi is in jail in Oregon on other charges. When he is done there, he will be extradited to King County for his arraignment.

Mwangi is WMW Capture #891.

FUGITIVE WANTED IN DES MOINES December 13, 2016 --
Des Moines police are hoping you can identify the suspect in an armed robbery at the Shell station in the 1700 block of South 272nd Street on Nov. 12.

The suspect was wearing a Chicago Bulls sweatshirt and kept cycling the slide on his semi-automatic pistol.

"As soon as the cash register opens, the suspect removes a semi-automatic pistol from his waistband and points it directly at the clerk. As soon as he takes it out, he works the slide on that semi-automatic pistol and he's telling the clerk to open the cash register and give me everything that's in there," said Des Moines Police Sgt. Doug Jenkins.

"He's obviously a concern. If he isn't familiar with the firearm he's using and he's gonna commit his crimes with his finger on the trigger, it's just a matter of time before we have a tragedy on our hands," said Jenkins.

The suspect is 20 to 25 years old, 5-foot-8 with a medium build. Witnesses described his unique hair as having small ponytails. If you know his name, download the P3 Tips App on your smart phone and submit the information anonymously to Crime Stoppers. There is a cash reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to his arrest.
