Everyone in Puget Sound should see some snow/wintry mix this week

SEATTLE -- Snow is in the forecast and everyone in the Puget Sound area should see at least some sort of snow/wintry mix for the start of the week with a chance for more winter weather coming by midweek.

Q13 Chief Meteorologist Walter Kelley says this "doesn't look like a major snowfall," but we all know even an inch can make commuting difficult. Kelley also says drivers should be extra careful all week for icy roads as we drop down to the 20s each morning.

Sunday

Cold air seeps into Settle and across western Washington today and tonight. Q13 Meteorologist Rebecca Stevenson says snow levels will drop to 1000 feet late Sunday afternoon with snow levels falling further to near 500 feet late Sunday night.

Cool high temperatures near 40° Sunday will keep a chance of a cold rain shower around for the lowlands.

Monday

Monday morning snow levels (200-500 feet) are low enough for snow showers or a rain/snow mixed shower next to Puget Sound.

Walter Kelley says foothill towns like Concrete, Wash. and Enumclaw, Wash. will likely get 2" of snow. Everett and places north of Seattle could also see 2".

The high hills around Seattle and Puyallup south hill could see 1" of snow. Most of the snow in Seattle and Tacoma will collect on the grass but will melt when it hits the pavement.

The snow should fall between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m. Monday morning.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for a large portion of western Washington lowlands to alert residents to the slippery conditions and snow showers.

Morning lows for Monday will be in the upper 20s to mid-30s. Monday highs will be in the upper 30s to near 40.

People living in the Convergence zone areas and northeast of Seattle could see snow again Monday night.

Tuesday & Wednesday

Tuesday morning will be cold with temperatures in the 20s. Dry weather will last through Wednesday. Morning lows in the 20s and daytime highs in the 30s each day.

Thursday

The Q13 Weather Center is tracking another wave of winter weather which is expected to come in late Wednesday or early Thursday morning.

The worst case scenario is a sweeping wet snowfall through the morning hours before a warmer air mass is able to prevent it.

The best case scenario is a series of increasing rain for a soggy day.

Q13 Meteorologist Tim Joyce says the timing for the Wednesday/Thursday event is everything. Several of the forecast models are leaning towards the precipitation arriving in the afternoon, which would mean it would start as rain and only the foothills and Cascades would get snow.

We’ll be watching Monday and Wednesday very closely.
