SPD: Cops trace stolen car, find thief asleep inside and lock him in

SEATTLE -- Seattle police found a stolen car with the thief inside taking a nap early Sunday morning in the Ravenna neighborhood.

Police received the report of a stolen BMW from the 4300 block of 8th Ave NE. The owner said a friend had borrowed the car and returned it without realizing that there was an extra key fob inside.

Investigators called BMW which was able to trace the car's location to the 2100 block of NE 63rd St. When officers arrived at that location, they found the car -- still running -- in an alley with the thief asleep at the wheel. Officers asked BMW to remotely lock the car which they did, trapping the suspect.

Police said the suspect tried to drive away but it was too late. Officers took the 38-year-old man into custody and booked him into King County Jail for investigation of auto theft and drug possession.
