West Seattle community holds unity gathering in light of Donald Trump victory

SEATTLE -- While some are expressing their dismay with the presidential election with protests, those in West Seattle wanted to show unity with a peaceful gathering.

It’s been said that laughter is the best medicine, and it’s just what West Seattle mom Mary Ellen Cunningham said she needed following the results of Tuesday’s presidential election.

“I was feeling scared, I was feeling deeply sad, and I was feeling deep shame,” Cunningham said.

Not wanting to be alone after Donald Trump’s win over Hillary Clinton, Cunningham emailed a few friends to meet at Reservoir Park in West Seattle on Wednesday night to talk about healing and moving forward. However, with the power of social media, the event took on a life of its own, bringing together strangers seeking solace.

“I don’t know that I can support President Trump specifically, but what I can do is support my community and support my fellow Americans no matter what they believe and what they stand for,” said Conni Navarre, one of the people who came to participate.

Dana Del Monte Townsend brought her whole family of four to the gathering. She said she wanted to commiserate with others.

“Tomorrow is a new day, but today is really just an important time to grieve,” said Del Monte Townsend.

While laughter might be the best medicine, a sense of community isn’t far behind.

“We’re gathered together to feel strong and feel connected and talk about how this means for us moving forward,” said Cunningham.
