Seattle mayor, political activists rally after Trump's win

SEATTLE – Less than 24 hours after voters elected Donald Trump to be the 45th President of the United States, community activists and politicians including Seattle Mayor Ed Murray planned events upset over the election results.

Murray, Congressmember-elect Pramila Jayapal, and other community leaders held a rally at city hall around noon.

The mayor reassured illegal immigrants that they are welcome in Seattle saying, the city will remain a sanctuary city despite threats of losing federal money.

Planned public protests

A LOVE Trumps HATE rally is planned from 11 to 1 p.m. at Cal Anderson Park, at 1635 11th Avenue.

According to the Facebook event, supporters are encouraged to hold signs of love and support.

“The election may have highlighted the worst of our country, but we can - and should - still come together.”

Another rally aimed at peace and love will be held at Myrtle Reservoir Park in West Seattle beginning at 5 p.m.

"This isn’t about joining to stand against our new president or the people who voted for him. It’s about joining together to stand FOR love, FOR justice, FOR equality, and to give a space for those who are grieving and afraid," said the event invitation.

People are encouraged to bring a picnic dinner, candles, games or instruments.

Organizers with Socialist Alternative have planned protests in Boston, New York, Oakland, Calif; and Seattle today.

“The Democratic Party has proven they are incapable of stopping Trump. The Democratic Party has failed. This is the result of the Democratic Party leadership backing Hillary Clinton instead of Bernie Sanders. It is time to build a new party of the 99%.”

That rally is set in Westlake Park, at 401 Pine St from 4 to 7 p.m.

Students walk out

Dozens of high students made their voice heard this morning. Students at Seattle high walked out of classes about 11 a.m.

Photos and video from the scene showed a large group of students marching. Some of them were reportedly yelling “Save America.”
