Marine View Drive reopens after landslide

TACOMA, Wash. – State Route 509, also known as Marine View Drive, reopened Wednesday morning after a landslide forced water and mud onto the roadway Tuesday.

Water is still flowing down the hillside, but road crews felt confident to open the highway. Officials with the Tacoma Public Works Department will monitor the spot along SR 509 between Slayden Road to East 11th Street throughout the day.

“Obviously there’s been a lot of water here in the month of October,” said Matt Fengler, of the Tacoma Public Works Department. “We’re waiting to see what it does from here on out.”

Crews said that stretch of the road does have a history of small slides and, due to all the recent rain, slides are a greater risk.

On Tuesday, bulldozers and a vacuum truck cleared debris and mud along SR 509.

SR 509 is one of the main ways to and from Browns Point and Tacoma.
