County buys land of murdered Oso couple, will demolish buildings on property

OSO, Wash. -- The property where a Snohomish County couple lived and where police say they were murdered will never be built on again.

Prosecutors say 46-year-old Monique Patenuade and 45-year-old Patrick Shunn were shot April 11 near Oso, a small community northeast of Seattle.

Snohomish County officials confirmed to Q13 News that the county acquired the property as part of a FEMA buyout related to the deadly Oso landslide. Part of that agreement means the buildings on the property will be demolished and the piece of land will remain open space.

In July, Mexican authorities arrested John Reed and turned him over to authorities in Arizona. Authorities brought him back to Washington and in August pleaded not guilty to two counts of aggravated murder and unlawful possession of a firearm.

His brother Tony Reed, who fled to Mexico with his brother, previously turned himself in and has pleaded guilty to two counts of rendering criminal assistance.
