Bold 'Battering Ram' burglars: Surveillance video shows destructive crooks spending hours breaking into Seattle licensing office

Determined: That's the best way to describe a pair of burglars who targeted a licensing office in the Georgetown area of Seattle.

Watch the video below, as these two thieves take turns trying to body slam, kick and ram their way through a door to get to a small safe. It took an extensive amount of effort just to get to this point in their caper late Saturday night. The video starts with one of the suspects cutting through a rear door at Georgetown License Agency.

Detectives say it took the crooks five hours of work. "Well, I certainly will give them an ‘A’ for effort in this case,” said Ret. Det. Myrle Carner with Crime Stoppers of Puget Sound.

It's not long before you see the first suspect stick his head in.

Seattle police believe he is familiar with the licensing office. "You'll see where he actually reaches under the door and he comes right up exactly and he can't see it but he turns the light on,” adds Carner. He then crawls into the room and is followed by the second suspect.

Then the heist gets comical as they try to break into a closet -- hurling themselves at it, bouncing off the door and kicking it. “At one point, they even take a fire extinguisher and try to break it in, no such luck, so they duck back out,” Carner says. “One of them returns with an unknown object, kind of looks like it's in a sack." The thief uses whatever it was like a battering ram, hitting the door once and knocking it open. He disappears for a couple seconds and then carries out a small safe, not even bothering to look for other items in the closet. Officers found it in a trash can with extensive damage, but it did not appear to have been opened.

The men escaped in a 1990 to 1993 white dodge B250 van.

So what was their motive to break into a department of licensing office? "Maybe you're looking for blank forms,” thinks Carner. “Maybe you're looking at driver's licenses that you can copy, getting information that leads to Identity Theft. That leads to falsified passports."
