'We are deeply saddened:' Community mourns victims killed in Cascade Mall shooting

BURLINGTON - The memorial outside Cascade Mall continues to grow for the five victims killed in Friday night’s shooting.

Strangers leave flowers, balloons and cards in support of the victims and the people closest to them. Belinda Galde, Beatrice Dotson, Chuck Eagan, Sarai Lara and Shayla Martin were all killed in the shooting.

On Monday, people who knew Belinda wanted the world to know about her dedication to her job as a probation officer.

“She told me she believed in me and I could do whatever I put my heart to,” Sam Huson said.

Huson says those words are from Belinda who not only kept her out of trouble but inspired her to be better.

“Thank you for always being there for me and not giving up on me, because anyone else probably would have,” Huson said.

Belinda and her 95-year-old mother Beatrice Dotson were together inside the Macy’s in Burlington when the shooter opened fire.

“She loved her mom a lot, her mom was her best friend,” Huson said.

The mom and daughter gunned down near Shayla Martin working at a makeup counter inside the Macy’s. Shayla Martin’s daughter Tanya Young says her mom was giving and graceful. Shayla was also a grandmother and Young says Shayla always put others before herself.

“Everyone that knew her was touched by her light she was intelligent funny and full of class,” Young said.

Chuck Eagan is the fourth victim and he was with his wife during the shooting.

“They heard click click click as soon as they heard that Chuck grabbed her and said come-on, at some point she tripped and fell and hit her head really hard on the ground,” ex-son in law Ray DeLorenzo said.

Family members believe Chuck was shot when he rushed back to find his wife.

“She is faulting herself for this situation how can you blame yourself for something you don’t know is going to happen,” DeLorenzo said.

DeLorenzo says the couple exemplified love.

“Sweetest lady and the nicest fella I mean for them it was a match made in heaven,” DeLorenzo said.

Chuck was a longtime Boeing employee and the company released a statement on Monday.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our colleague. Chuck Eagan was a valued team member who worked in Boeing Commercial Airplanes in Everett. Our heartfelt condolences go out to everyone affected by this tragedy.”

The youngest victim is 16-year-old Sarai Lara, a Mount Vernon High School student who had already been through so much in her life. She battled cancer but in the end her life cut short by senseless violence.

Through a translator, Sarai’s parents expressed their grief over the weekend and on Monday students wore purple to school and to court where the alleged shooter appeared in front of a judge.

“She was a nice person she was caring everyone said she was respectful,” Mount Vernon High school student Alondra Santiago said.
