Director of 'The Hand That Rocks the Cradle,' filmed in Tacoma, dies

Curtis Hanson, who directed one of the most well-known movies ever filmed in the Puget Sound region, died on Tuesday, according to various reports.

Hanson, who won an Oscar for adapted screenplay for his work on L.A. Confidential, also directed "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle."

"The Hand That Rocks the Cradle," which was released in 1992, was filmed almost entirely on scene at 808 N. Yakima in North Tacoma.

The film, which starred Annabella Sciorra and Rebecca De Mornay, become something of a pop-culture sensation for its creepy portrayal of a psycho nanny trying to take over a mother's family. The Tacoma house provided a memorable backdrop.

Hanson was also well-known for several other films, including "8 Mile" and "The River Wild."

Hanson was 71, and Variety reported that he'd retired due to Alzheimer's.
